Souvenirs d'un paysage n° 4

1994, paper, wood, 3 video monitors, 6 speakers, 3 video programmes, 6 audio programmes

each element: 45 x 30 x 20 cm

Souvenirs d'un paysage n° 4 «les sacs» is the most complex work of the series Souvenirs d'un paysage. It is an installation comprising thirteen paper shopping bags attached to video players by cables arranged on a gallery floor. In six of the bags are speakers each playing back a different soundtrack. Three speakers emit recorded sounds of the countryside while three others emit spoken words describing the landscape. Three other bags contain small (five inch) video monitors showing imagery of landscape recorded close-up and played back as a series of freeze frames. The four remaining bags are empty. To experience this installation we must look or listen to each bag individually and subsequently reconstruct the landscape from its fragments. The shopping bags contain elements of a landscape that I remember and have brought home with me. The empty bags are what I have forgotten.
